1 Peter
Introduction
Peter wrote to Christians scattered across Asia Minor (modern-day Turkey)—believers who were experiencing opposition, slander, and suffering because of their faith. They were beginning to feel the weight of being outsiders in a culture that did not understand or accept their trust in and obedience to Christ.
Peter most likely wrote this letter while in Rome around AD 64, during a period of increasing persecution. The Roman Emperor Nero’s influence was growing, and the church was about to enter a time of severe trial. Tradition holds that Peter himself was martyred under this persecution around AD 65.
Purpose of the Letter
With this background in mind, Peter reminds believers that they are chosen by God, set apart through Christ, and called to live as a holy people—even when it is difficult. Their identity is not defined by suffering or rejection but by belonging to God’s family.
Peter strengthens them by describing the living hope they have through the resurrection of Jesus Christ: an inheritance that cannot perish and the privilege of shining God’s light into a dark world.
